This situation is similar to how the world entered the second world war, the British Prime Minister tried to negotiate with Hitler and of course, Hitler had no intentions of peace at all, and Winston Churchill was right to prepare for war, the same thing is going on here, Putin has no intentions of peace and we would be better off going straight after him.
